Norway Spruce

Norway Spruce has a fine, even texture and a consistently straight grain. It is easy to work with, as long as there are no knots present. It is best used for construction lumber, paper (pulp wood), crates and millwork.

Sitka Spruce

Picea sitchensis

Sitka is easy to work with as long as there are no knots present. The stiffness to weight ratio lends itself to a variety of commercial uses such as lumber, boxes/crates, furniture, millwork, boatbuilding (masts and spars), wind turbine blades, etc.

Douglas Fir

Pseudotsuga menzeisii

Among the hardest and heaviest softwoods commercially available. Douglas fir is moderately resistant to decay. It typically machines well, is widely used in construction and building, as well as for veneers and plywood.

Widely available in northern Europe.

Mainly Abies Alba and Abies Grandis.

Fir is straight-grained with a uniform medium-coarse texture and easy to work with both hand and machine tools. It is best used for construction lumber, paper (pulpwood), plywood and other utility wood purposes.

Larix kaempferi and Larix decidua

Larch is has a moderate resistance to decay. Larch species are used for veneers, utility poles, fence posts, flooring, boatbuilding, and construction lumber. Japanese Larch is also used for decking and furniture.

Pine is a straight-grained, even-textured soft wood. Pine is easy to work with both hand and machine tools. It is widely used for utility poles, posts, boxes/crates, flooring, paper (pulpwood), and construction lumber.

Hemlock

Hemlock has good working properties overall. The largest of the hemlocks, Western Hemlock is most used for boxes, pallets, crates, plywood, framing, and other construction purposes.
